Gallery Lodge No. 1928 Date of Constitution: 27th July 1881 Meeting Venue: Freemasons Hall Meeting Frequency: 1st Saturday in February 3rd Saturday in June 1st Saturday in September 1st Saturday in December Installation Meeting: December Visiting Officer: Andy Stanymyr Secretary: Jon Barber secretarygallerylodge@gmail.com The Gallery Lodge was consecrated on 13th August 1881 and has therefore entered into its 2nd century. To put that longevity into perspective, the Lodge has existed through the Reign of seven Sovereigns. The overwhelming reason for the formation of the Lodge was that it would provide a masonic opportunity for journalists, many of them parliamentary reporters, who traditionally worked late in the evening and found it difficult to attend masonic meetings on weekdays. As a result The Gallery Lodge was formed and has always held its meetings on a Saturday. The “Gallery” in the Lodge name refers to the Parliamentary Press Gallery in the House of Commons from which many of the original members where drawn. At its formation, the Lodge was a “closed” Lodge exclusively for journalists and indeed this was the case from 1881 to 1982. However, changes in society and more specifically changes to the composition of Fleet Street and The Press Gallery, from which many members were recruited, required the Lodge to adapt to those changed circumstances. As the Lodge struggled to attract journalists to join, in 1982 a decision was taken such that the Lodge became a Lodge “open” to all men regardless of their profession. These days the Lodge has members drawn from a wide variety of trades, professions and Services. It is a very international lodge with members originating from Lebanon, Rumania and Bulgaria as well as many different English Counties. We are all very proud of the Lodge history and the Lodge Banner reminds us of it with the inclusion of the Parliamentary Coat of Arms. The lodge works West End Ritual, which was probably first published in the 1870’s but represents a working considerably older. It appears to have had its rise in one or more Lodges of Instruction operating in the Mayfair and Kensington areas, hence its name. The Lodge has members between the ages of 21 and 80 and the culture of the Lodge is very friendly, vibrant and welcoming. We are friends and there is much companionship and encouragement amongst the membership. The Gallery Lodge meets four times each year on the first Saturday in December (Installation Meeting) and February, the third Saturday in June and the first Saturday in September. All meetings take place at 3.00pm at Freemasons Hall, Great Queen Street, London. Gallery Lodge always welcomes and embraces new members whether they are new to Freemasonry or already established Freemasons.

Lodge of Equity No. 3692 Date of Constitution: 21st October 1913 Meeting Venue: Freemasons Hall Meeting Frequency: 3rd Saturday in January 4th Saturday in March 3rd Saturday in May 3rd Saturday in November Installation Meeting: January Visiting Officer: Tim Sherwood Secretary: Chris Benton bentonfamily@compuserve.com Our Lodge membership has traditionally consisted of a large number of Barrister's Clerks. However, over the last 25 years more of our membership has come from other professions. We now have 34 members who live and work all over the Greater London Area, mostly within the M25. Our age group is mixed. We pride ourselves on producing ritual to a high standard, without reading, while still making sure that we enjoy ourselves. We are fortunate enough to have a deep pool of ritual experience within our Lodge members, which is used to encourage the younger members of the Lodge. Our Festive Boards are relaxed and quite often noisy! We are currently dining at Trattoria Verdi Southampton Row. We also hold a regular well attended LOI most Tuesdays in an upstairs private room at the Bishops Finger Public House in West Smithfield between September and May.

North Star Lodge No. 3927 Date of Constitution: 3rd March 1919 Meeting Venue: Freemasons Hall Meeting Frequency: 4th Wednesday in March 3rd Wednesday in May 3rd Wednesday in September 3rd Wednesday in November Installation Meeting: November Visiting Officer: Tim Sherwood Secretary: Jody Townsend (Acting) JodyTownsend@gmail.com The North Star Lodge No. 3927 was consecrated on Friday 16th May 1919. We were formed by members of 2 sponsoring Lodges, Eltham Palace Lodge and The Ordinance Lodge. Our name originates in honour of one of the founding members of the Lodge, Sir Harry North, who had served in the Great War, and who had only recently returned home at the time of the Lodge being formed. At the time of writing this profile, we currently have 39 subscribing members and 1 honorary member. Our membership is made up from a wide variety of professions including accountants, bankers, police officers, NHS staff, IT professionals & security consultants to name but a few. We hold 4 meetings per calendar year at Freemasons Hall, Great Queen Street, normally starting at 4.30pm on the 4th Wednesday in March and the 3rd Wednesdays in May, September and November. The November meeting is our Installation meeting, at which a new Master is “Installed” as the head of the Lodge. After each formal meeting we usually dine in The Freemasons Arms public house, just a short 2-minute walk away from Freemasons Hall, and usually have somewhere between 25 and 30 attending & dining. A typical festive board is always a happy occasion and consists of a 3 course meal, costing £35 including wine. Our membership covers a diverse age range, with an average age of mid 50’s – Our youngest member is 28 years old ranging up to our oldest member at 96 years young! Of note though is that our last 5 members were all aged 40 or under at the time of their joining, and we anticipate and hope for this trend to continue. Also noteworthy is that these 5 members joined our Lodge as “unsponsored” candidates, i.e., not introduced by other existing members within the Lodge - All now occupy working “progressive” offices in the Lodge, are all regular attendees at meetings & social events, and are fully engaged, supported and enjoying their Freemasonry. 4 of these members also form part of our “Personal Mentoring” team. Primarily our members all live in London or within the home Counties, however we also have members from further away such as Oxford, South Wales, the Sussex coast, Wiltshire & Dorset. In addition to our formal meetings, we try to hold at least a couple of social functions throughout the year including a “Ladies Festival”, where wives, partners and friends are invited to a weekend away to enjoy one another’s company. We have also held summer family BBQ’s and midweek suppers as well is informal get togethers during the Masonic off season, to keep in touch with one another. North Star Lodge takes pride in being a happy and friendly Lodge, welcoming to all. We take great care in ensuring the welfare of our members and their families is looked after, as well as being supporters of a wider range of masonic and non‐masonic charitable activities. In 2022 we aim to distribute £9,500 to a wide variety of charitable organisations. As a Lodge, every member is supportive and encouraging of each other’s Masonic progress, and we aim to deliver high standards of ritual consistently at every meeting. In preparation for each of these we normally hold a minimum 2 rehearsals before each meeting at Freemasons Hall. Principally though we want to ensure that every Brother enjoys their Masonic activities. We therefore recognise the need to embrace the views & needs of our entire membership, from the very youngest to the most senior, whilst at the same time ensuring that the traditions and ethos of our founding members is preserved. We are keen to recruit new members who we believe will embrace our aims and objectives, and make a positive contribution to the future activities and success of the Lodge, and, in line with the fundamental principles of Freemasonry, we welcome enquiries from all applicants, irrespective of race and creed. Everyone will be assured of a warm & friendly welcome.

St. Vedast Lodge No. 4033 Date of Constitution: 3rd December 1918 Meeting Venue: Freemasons Hall Meeting Frequency: 4th Friday in January 4th Friday in March 4th Friday in September 4th Friday in October Installation Meeting: September Visiting Officer: Allen Sternstein Secretary: Stanley Haines stanley.haines@hainesphillips.co.uk The Lodge was sponsored by Wansted Lodge No 3524, surprisingly as we cannot find any visible connections between this lodge and our founders, the most prominent of whom was Bro George B. Mardell LGR our Primus Master. We were originally to be named “The Cheapside Lodge” as many founders had business premises there, but later altered to St Vedast after the city church of that name nearby in Foster Lane. The lodge was consecrated by the Grand Secretary Bro P. Colville-Smith at Mark Mason’s Hall. It was the first lodge consecrated after the ratification of the Peace. One of our early members was Bro R. Cruickshank who was awarded a VC in the Great War and his commemorative stone is now positioned in the pavement in front of the main entry to Freemasons’ Hall with those other Masonic VC holders. Another member Bro A. Richardson was at one time Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur FC. St Vedast was a French saint who was the Bishop of Arras in the sixth Century. His French name was Bishop Gaston and he converted the Gaul King Clovis to Christianity. The church was thought to be established in London in the twelfth Century and was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London. It was completely burnt out in the Blitz but later restored to its original design. It is thought many of its original parishioners were of Flemish decent and their history of working in cloth was reflected in the similar background of many of our lodge founders in the clothing industry. There is only one other St Vedast Church in this country. The lodge became a Hallstone Lodge, moving to Great Queen Street where it has remained ever since. It is also a founding lodge of The Royal Masonic Hospital and more recently of the Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London. It has never had an attached Chapter but many current members are also members of C1320. Likewise although technically a “City Lodge” it has also never been connected to any Livery, although some members have had city connections including one as a Church Warden of St Vedast Church. Since the consecration the lodge has been through both good and bad times with a peak of 68 members in 1928 and a nadir of less than 20 members in 1996. However the lodge has kept going and more recently has been bolstered by twinning with Wisdom Lodge of Ankara under the Grand Lodge of Turkey. This was largely brought about by one of our most prominent recent members Bro S. Dixon PAGDC , also in the clothing industry, who had business interests in Turkey and since when we have seen our membership grow with a number of Turkish initiates and joining members. The lodge now has a diverse membership of nearly 30. Dining is currently at a Turkish restaurant, “The Antalya” reflecting our recent twinning. St Vedast Lodge is proud of its history, its standard of Universal Ritual and of its happy and diverse membership which now not only includes our Turkish members but others from Romania, Ireland and China, as well as a core of English brethren who continue to guide the Lodge. Quite a mix with a large number of younger brethren now progressing through the Lodge towards the Chair. Having just completed our first hundred years we confidently look forward to our next!

Semper Fidelis Lodge No. 4393 Date of Constitution: 1st February 1922 Meeting Venue: Freemasons Hall Meeting Frequency: 4th Saturday in February 3rd Saturday in April 4th Saturday in September 4th Saturday in November Installation Meeting: April Visiting Officer: John Woodnott-Miller Secretary: Andrew Ellis andrewellis126@btinternet.com This brief outline is based on the Lodge History that has been very capably researched and compiled by W Bro Vic Tarry. The petition to Grand Lodge, for a new Lodge, was received on the 8th of December 1921 and the Lodge was constituted on the 1st of January 1922. The names of the founders appears on our summons and are taken as read. The Lodge was consecrated on Saturday the 22nd of April 1922 in the Grand Temple of Freemasons’ Hall, and it was born out of the Earl Amherst Lodge No 3230 which was consecrated in 1907. One hundred and thirty-four visitors attended the consecration. The name of the Lodge was selected by the founders as Semper Fidelis – meaning Ever Faithful, or Always Loyal - and this name was praised by the Rev Smith in his oration as it embodies the great ideal of everlasting fidelity, and the bond of faithful service. The cost involved was a total of £20:19:6d - £20:97½p in today’s money – within which the key costs were the proposal form at four pounds and six pence and the warrant at fifteen pounds and fifteen shillings. The first Lodge meeting was held in the Grecian Temple of the Abercorn Rooms, at the Great Eastern Hotel, on May the 27th, 1922 - Taylors West End having been chosen as the workings. In the course of our history, there have been many notable events and distinguished members in the Lodge, but a few require particular mention: In September 1928 following the death of her husband W. Bro J. S. Daniels, Mrs Daniels presented the Lodge with a legacy for the purchase of several silver loving cups in her husband’s memory. These were for presentation to each Worshipful Master on completion of his year in office, in recognition of his sterling work for the lodge – and this became a Lodge tradition. In April 1942 there was a very particular notice of motion; Any Lodge member serving in His Majesty’s Forces may have his fees waived during hostilities. Bro S.G.Morley has been the only brother to be Initiated in Semper Fidelis but Passed and Raised in another lodge - as whilst serving in the Royal Navy during 1943-44, his progression was accommodated by the Royal Prince of Wales Lodge No 867. During the last war, the Lodge was informed by the son of Bro A.P. Knowland that his father had been killed in action and had posthumously received the Victoria Cross. As a mark of respect, the decoration was placed on the Master’s pedestal at the Installation meeting of April 1946. A copy of the letter that accompanied the award is incorporated into the Lodge history to mark his valour. In 1947, the Secretary announced that the usual Ladies Festival and dinner could not go ahead due to the rationing restrictions. Thereafter, the Ladies Festival was a yearly event until 2003, when falling membership numbers made it unviable to continue. September 1952 saw Semper Fidelis Chapter 4393 consecrated – the beginning what we today call the Semper Fidelis Family of workings. W. Bro Charles Taylor, who served as an RAF pilot in the last war, subsequently joined BOAC and BEA and in 1968 captained a Boeing 707 whose wing caught fire and lost an engine shortly after takeoff. He managed a difficult landing saving the lives of over 100 passengers and crew - and was awarded the Airline Pilots Association Gold Medal. For many years, W Bro. Charles was Director of Ceremony in Semper Fidelis, and for each meeting he always produced his Flight plan to assist the officers during the ceremony, and to this day the Semper Fidelis D.C. issues a ‘Charles Taylor Flight Plan’ for every ceremony. 1976 saw W. Bro. Sydney Layton became Worshipful Master -forty-three years after his initiation - the longest time in the Lodge’s history before reaching the chair. In January 1977, the Semper Fidelis Lodge of Mark Master Masons 1473 was consecrated at Mark Masons Hall, followed by The Royal Arch Mariners in 1978. W. Bro Brian Johnson and W. Bro Vic Tarry (still members of SF Lodge) being founders, reiterating the words of the Rev Smith at the Consecration of this Lodge - indeed we all feel that there is a great Semper Fidelis ‘family’ of Craft, Chapter, Mark and RAM, with ‘family’ events being held, such that we continue forever faithful. Until April 1982, every Lodge meeting, excluding the Consecration, was held in the Grecian Temple in the Great Eastern Hotel, but in that year, the hotel advised Semper Fidelis that no further Masonic meetings would be possible on Saturdays, ending the sixty-year association. The only two active members of the Lodge today who have had the privilege of being W.M. in that temple are W. Bro. Brian Johnson and W. Bro. Vic Tarry. In August 1982 a dispensation was granted for the Lodge to meet – here - in Great Queen Street, commencing with the September 1982 meeting. In 1984, the funds for the Loving Cup began to falter, however, W. Bro. Freddie Hughes, upon his death, left a sum of money in a legacy to support the tradition started in 1928, and, it was agreed, it would be renamed the J. S. Daniels and F. C. Hughes Loving Cup. Because an intention that the cups be returned to the Lodge when a brother resigns or passes to the Grand Lodge above is generally honoured, the presentation of a Loving Cup to each IPM continue to this day. At our February 2018 meeting, on behalf of the brethren, W. Bro. Andrew Ellis presented a newly Raised candidate, Bro. Michael Sharan with a 1922 Silver Sixpence, to serve as a reminder of the year of consecration of the Lodge. This has become a continuing Lodge tradition upon the completion of a candidate’s Third Degree. There have been five 50 Years Service members in Semper Fidelis Lodge: W. Bro Frost in February 1974 W. Bro Sydney Layton in February 1983 W. Bro Charles Taylor in 2000 W. Bro Brian Johnson in November 2019, and W. Bro Vic Tarry in February 2021. At the present time, we have 32 members, and an additional 4 Honorary Members. Excepting the period of the COVID restrictions and the dates of Installation ceremonies, there has been at least one Initiation, Passing or Raising at every meeting since November 2016, and more ceremonies are currently in planning - promising a secure future, and the hope that those coming after us should be able to celebrate a Semper Fidelis bicentenary in 2122.

We have a long lineage dating back to 1765 when our ‘great-great-grandmother’ lodge, St Luke’s Lodge No. 144 was formed. At the time of writing, Tower Lodge is one of about 270 lodges that can trace their roots to St Luke’s all of whom support each other on various activities. As an example, several of our members were honoured to be asked to perform in an ancient ritual in The Grand Temple (FMH) to mark the 250th anniversary of St Luke’s. We also have a close affiliation with Prospect Lodge No. 714 of the Grand Lodge of Indiana and have recently hosted them in FMH, as well as our members travelling to Indiana to participate in their masonic ceremonies. We currently have a subscribing membership in the high thirties, from a wide range of backgrounds and occupations, reflecting all the major religions including Sikhism, Islam, Judaism and Christianity. We meet at FMH four times per year. These meetings usually start mid to late afternoon and end about 6 pm. Afterwards, we dine at “a local hostelry, where we partake of an excellent meal”. As several of our members travel long distances to FMH and have trains to catch, we try to finish by 9 pm. It is also our intention to hold more regular social functions including our usual Ladies Night. Our Lodge prides itself on its multicultural diversity, is extremely friendly and has a healthy mix of young and old members who hail from as far afield as Chesterfield and Derby, with around half of us living and working in/around the London area. We hold regular Lodge of Instruction meetings in Derby and FMH and being an integral part of one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political organisations, based on fraternal and charitable principles, we also like to ensure our masonic ceremonies are as polished as possible, for the enjoyment of the members and our visitors alike. Like many other Lodges we do not take our membership cadre for granted and are always looking to attract, retain and develop new members who are willing to buy into our traditions, ethos, and quest for continuous improvement in everything we do…and of course have fun along the way! Hence, we are keen to hear from applicants from all backgrounds irrespective of race or creed who want to make a positive contribution to our future activities and help us secure the future of The Tower Lodge No. 5159 for generations to come.
